Eating Healthier As We Age Doesn't Have To Mean Being Deprived

Healthy eating is important no matter what age we are but in order to maintain good health as we age the healthier we eat the better. This fact is important for a number of different reasons. As we age, many people begin to slow down their amount of activity on a daily basis. This can begin happening because of such things as age related illnesses, injuries or just general aches and pains that keep us from doing the things we used to enjoy doing. When this happens often times people don't change their eating habits to reflect this change in activity and the result can be an unexpected weight gain.

On top of this unpleasant side effect of aging is the fact that with the hormone changes that go along with the aging process our metabolisms begins to slow down as well. This means that we now require even less food to sustain this lower level of activity then ever before in our lifetime. This can make it even more difficult for older people to maintain the same weight they have in the past.

We Need Proper Nutrition to Sustain Good Health as We Age

With all of these changes occurring as we age we all need to eat healthier as we adjust the amount, types and frequency of the foods we eat to compensate for these changes. Or besides the problems that can occur with gaining more weight than we had previously with the same amount of food, we may find that we aren't getting enough of the proper nutrition to sustain good health into those years labeled as the "golden years."

Although the aging body requires less food to survive and maintain the same weight it now requires even more in the way of healthy nutrients to keep functioning properly. So if you cut back on the wrong foods and still eat the bad or junk foods your body won't have the proper nutrients available to keep you healthy and strong. You will also become even more susceptible to age related illnesses and even injuries when you're lacking in the necessary nutrition to help you battle off these invaders.

So now more than ever, you will need to pay close attention to healthier eating and maintaining a proper level of activity. Ask for assistance if need be from physicians and nutritionists to make sure you're feeding your body everything that it needs. Next, consult with a physical fitness trainer about the activities that you can perform safely and comfortably based on your individual health and physical condition.

Plan Your Meals Around Healthier Eating

Make sure you understand the importance of the food groups and choose wisely from each of these on a daily basis. Avoid unhealthy fats and sweets and learn to apply moderation to whatever you consume. Plan your meals around these healthier eating habits and do your shopping from a preplanned list so you don't sneak the junk food into your cart in a moment of weakness. If the foods that are bad for you aren't readily available in your home you will be much less likely to eat them.

In order to get yourself started on the path to good nutrition, you might want to keep a food journal for a week. Be honest with yourself and record everything that you consume for that entire week. Once you compare what your eating now to a healthy food plan you can see where you need to make improvement. However, don't try to change your eating habits all at once. Make changes slowly and adjust your habits gradually over a period of time.

Eating healthier as you age in order to achieve or maintain good health doesn't have to feel like your being deprived. Include the food you enjoy the most and remember moderation is the key to a healthy lifestyle.
